1. With a heavy heart, I tried to continue my work. Tears kept streaming down my face. I hung my head, afraid the others could see me cry and say I was a cry baby. The room was filled with silence after my mother scolding, except for my sobs. My eyes turned puffy and red.

2. In the bathroom, after I blew my nose with toilet paper, I was able to stop crying. But I could see in the mirror that my eyeballs were red, so I tried to think of somethimg to make me happy and turn them back to white. Staring at myself at the mirror, I remembered how Betsy thought my fantasies were dumb and never wanted me to describe them to her. But my fantasies make me feel better. I could see that my eyes weren't that red anymore, so I blew my nose one more time and headed back to class.

3. I hugged my pillow over my face so my mother wouldn't hear me crying. After dinner, I went to my favourite spot in the house-the basement. I jumped onto the back of the sofa and slid down the pole that held up the ceiling in the middle of the room. I kept doing that until I was bored; then I twirled around the pole till I got dizzy and had to sit on the floor.

4. The youngsters followed Justice Strauss out the door and over to her well-kept house. She led them through an elegant hallway smelling of flowers into an enormous room, and when they saw what was inside, they nearly fainted from delight, Klaus especially. Although it was not as big as their parents' library, it was as cozy, and the Baudelaire children were thrilled.
